Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the implementation of a biodigester for organic solid waste (OSW) generated in a neighborhood in the municipality of Itacoatiara, Amazonas. The methodological process to analyze the potential of biogas, the identification of parameters and the potential environmental benefits were based on a database of scientific literature. The results showed that the amount of OSW generated in the study area was 1,441 t day-1, which allowed a daily production of 132.57 m³ day-1 of methane, making a monthly energy production equivalent to 9,843.9 kWh month-1 that could serve 51 households. In addition, the results showed that the biodigester would have a volume of 129.9 m³. From this research, it was possible to infer that the innovation of energy sources, such as the implementation of biodigesters, can generate a considerable amount of energy, in addition to reducing environmental, social and economic damages. Therefore, it is important to highlight the need for studies to analyze the impact that biodigesters would cause considering the use of OSW in the entire municipality and measure the economic returns of its implementation.
