Abstract
The changes caused to the environment have made human beings rethink their attitudes towards nature. In view of the foregoing, the concept of Sustainable Development has been used in many situations. In civil construction, this term may be applied through the proposal of buildings that properly interact with the climatic conditions of the surrounding environment and guarantee comfort to their residents. In this sense, this paper seeks to discuss the ways of improving buildings’ sustainability from Brazilian semiarid, proposing solar shading devices to dwellings from Paulo Afonso – BA. According to the study of the geometry of the insolation in the locality, shading device models were suggested to protect windows from direct solar radiation, especially during periods when temperatures are highest in the region. The results demonstrate the need to use mixed shading devices. The designed protectors are presented as a means of reducing heat gains from radiation passing through windows. The analyses lead to the conclusion that solar shading devices contribute to a more thermally comfortable environment.
