Abstract
The first contraceptive pill, developed in the United States in the 1960s, combined the hormones estrogen and progesterone, being
marketed just two years later in Brazil. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of users of the health system specializing in obstetrics and
gynecology about contraception. This is a descriptive cross-sectional research where 77 women were interviewed. Among the interviewees, 92.8% know what contraceptives are and 40.6% started using these contraceptive methods after guidance from a health professional. When asked the reason for using the contraceptive, 26.1% said to avoid a possible pregnancy. As for the harm that these synthetic hormones can trigger, 17.4% reported weight gain. There was an understanding of the
method, but a large percentage started using it without the help of a health professional. Therefore, with the collection of data, using the results of the questionnaire, it may be an aid in the health promotion of this population,
bringing benefits to the programs that are developed in the health unit where the research
was carried out.
