Abstract

The sharp growth of cases and deaths has led some cities to reach extreme conditions resulting in a great overload of the health system leading to high rates of hospital death. This study aims to analyze the cases and deaths of COVID-19 in Brazil and in the North region during the pandemic. This is an ecological, exploratory study with a quantitative approach, where the number of cases and mortality of COVID-19 at national, regional (North) and state (Rondônia) levels in the years 2020 and 2021 were analyzed. The incidence of cases in Brazil in the years 2020 and 2021 was 22,739,394, of which 8.41% were reported cases in the North region and 14.78% of the cases in the North region were from Rondônia. It is worth noting the possibility of underreporting cases for periods, especially at the beginning of the pandemic, where the availability of tests sometimes became limited. It is concluded that the pandemic has brought numerous challenges to public health, highlighting the vulnerabilities of the unified health system and that isolation is a great ally for reducing transmission and consequent number of cases and that vaccines are an important tool in the fight the pandemic.
