Abstract

Burnout syndrome, recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a work-related disorder, is a psychophysiological response to chronic stress stemming from excessive and prolonged job demands. According to widely accepted clinical models, Burnout manifests through a tripartite pattern of symptoms—involving emotional exhaustion, interpersonal distancing, and a sense of professional inefficacy—which together deplete the individual's physical and mental reserves. This article aims to analyze Burnout as a direct consequence of overwork, outlining its impacts on mental health, job performance, and interpersonal relationships. The study employs a qualitative and descriptive methodology, drawing upon both classic and contemporary research in the fields of organizational psychology, occupational medicine, and public health. Findings indicate that a culture of hyper-productivity, extended working hours, and the blurring of boundaries between personal and professional life are key factors driving the development of the syndrome. Furthermore, the study highlights the correlation between Burnout and increased depressive symptoms, sleep disorders, cognitive impairment, and social isolation. It concludes that Burnout extends beyond individual health, representing a psychosocial and institutional issue that requires multidisciplinary interventions, preventive organizational policies, and sustained self-care practices. Promoting healthy work environments, strengthening psychosocial support, and recognizing mental health as a fundamental aspect of workplace relations are urgent measures for mitigating this condition. The study reaffirms the need to view Burnout not as a personal weakness, but as a reflection of systemic dysfunctions within contemporary work culture.
